Kleep's fit engine, built for feet

About the brand

Founded in 2012 by Christina Martini and Nikolas Minoglou, Ancient Greek Sandals makes leather sandals by hand in Greece, using vegetable-tanned leather and techniques little changed since their namesake civilisation, winged buckles and all. What began as a homage to the sandals of the ancients became a cult global brand: stocked by the world's best retailers, worn from Athens to the Hamptons, and built on a product whose beauty lies in its simplicity, a few straps, a leather sole, and craftsmanship doing all the work. That simplicity is deceptive commercially. A handmade sandal is an intimate fit object: natural leather moulds to its wearer, strap geometry decides everything, and the brand's international e-commerce customers buy across EU, UK and US size systems, sight unseen. Ancient Greek Sandals sells worldwide the kind of product that, for most of history, you would never have bought without trying on.

Challenge

Footwear is its own fit science, and sandals are its exposed edge. Fit is decided by the last, by width, by strap position across the instep, dimensions no apparel-derived sizing logic even has words for, and natural leather adds a temporal twist: it gives with wear, so the right fit at first try is snugger than intuition suggests. Cross-border conversion multiplies the guesswork, as customers translate between EU, UK and US scales with half-sizes lost in between. And the consequence is binary in a way clothing rarely is: a sandal half a size wrong doesn't get worn anyway, it gets returned, in a category where handmade production makes every boomeranged pair costly. Standard apparel sizing tools simply don't translate to feet. When Ancient Greek Sandals looked for guidance, it needed an engine genuinely built for footwear, and, in the brand's pragmatic style, it wanted the impact proven on live traffic, not asserted.

Solution

Ancient Greek Sandals became Kleep's first footwear client, going live in April 2025 with the fit engine adapted for feet from the ground up: lasts, widths and strap geometry modelled per style, leather give factored into the recommendation, and cross-market size conversion handled invisibly so a US customer and a French one reach the same physical fit through their own size language. Shoppers complete a short flow, questionnaire-led, tuned for footwear's specific inputs, and every product page returns a calibrated recommendation in under 250 milliseconds, inside an interface white-labelled to the brand's sun-bleached minimalism. Then came the honest part: rather than declare victory, the brand validated the deployment through an A/B test on live traffic, measuring guided against unguided shoppers on the metrics that matter. For a first-of-category deployment, that discipline mattered, footwear was a new frontier for Kleep, and both sides wanted proof rather than a press release.

Results

The A/B test on live traffic delivered strong results, confirming that precision fit isn't only for ready-to-wear, and establishing footwear as a proven Kleep category rather than an experiment. The category evidence has since deepened: in Faguo's footwear A/B test, Kleep's guidance drove +6.7% add-to-cart and +6.8% checkout, measured, category-specific proof that the engine's footwear adaptation moves the metrics that decide a shoe business. For Ancient Greek Sandals, the commercial logic is amplified by its model: every avoided return on a handmade pair protects margin that mass-produced footwear never has to defend, and every first-time-right delivery turns a cross-border gamble into a repeat customer. The deployment also opened a lane for Kleep's portfolio, the footwear engine proven here now serves multi-category retailers like Intersport, where the shoe wall sits beside the ski aisle, sized by the same platform that started with a handmade Greek sandal.
